Triada Publising house, which owns the rights to publish the US magazine for programmers, Dr Dobbs, in Russia, is in serious financial trouble. The editor-in-chief, Mikahail Salnikov, says the problems are a result of an incorrect marketing policy pursued since the autumn of 1992. At the end of 1992 this led to what he calls a complete falling down at the end of 1992. Currently the Dr Dobbs journal is financed by NPO Elbe and from its display advertisements. The former director of the publishing house, Anatoly Eides, says the magazine’s financial problems began earlier. A year ago he called on the support of NPO Elbe which now owns a 30% stake in the publishing house. Triada has set up another magazine which it hopes will help cover Dr Dobbs’ losses. The new publication, called Compulog, is expected to cover all aspects of high technology and will be edited by Mr Salinkov’s son. Whatever happens to Dr Dobbs in the short-term, Triada is confident it can solve its problems in the long-term. According to Mr Salnikov the company has now officially registered the name in Russia so that even if the licence is terminated, publication will still be possible.
