The Council for Internet Commerce, an eccentric body whose members range from NT Times columnist Denise Caruso to the Harvard Law School’s Lawrence Lessig, has opened the second and final round of voting on its Standard for Internet Commerce. The Council hopes the Standard will codify e-commerce’s best practices so as to increase consumer satisfaction, confidence and trust. In this round of voting, consumers can have their say on whether merchants should disclose who they are, how to contact them and their return, cancellation, warranty and support policies; provide confirmation that they have received a customer’s order; let consumers decide how their personal information should be used; and so forth. Jim Hake, founder of the Council, urged the public to participate in the creation of the Standard. Consumers should seize this opportunity to shape how business is conducted and how consumers are treated online, he said. รก
