Twenty-two operators and more than 50 European-based ISDN equipment and application suppliers are to take part in the EURopean ISDN Event, EURIE ’93, which is due to run from December 14 to 16. Rather than a centralised showcase for ISDN, separate demonstrations are to take place in 50 cities across Europe: applications to be demonstrated include video telephony, Group IV facsimile, 7KHz telephony and file transfer. The event, which is being organised and hosted by the European Commission, will open with a ceremony in Brussels on December 14, which will be broadcast to the other European countries taking part using ISDN videophones. Among the companies intending to take part are the public telecommunications operators from most European countries (including France Telecom, Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, British Telecommunications Plc, and Mercury Communications Ltd among others), while the project is being sponsored by a wide range of companies including Alcatel Network Systems, Ascom Business Systems AG, Gandalf Technologies Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM Corp, Newbridge Networks Inc, Northern Telecom Meridian, and Spider Systems Ltd.
