Westborough, Massachusetts company Proteon International says it is to lead the development of an IEEE 802 standard supporting Token Ring frames over 100Base-VG. Currently under development as an IEEE 802.12 standard, 100base-VG is an emerging local network technology which supports 100Mbps over commonly used workgroup wiring (four pair voice or data grade unshielded twisted-pair) and incorporates the deterministic Demand Priority Protocol. The company was due to submit a proposal to the High Performance Token Architecture 802.5 Study Group at the 802.5 Interim meeting on September 27. Proteon’s strength in integrating multiple protocols put us in a unique position to drive the standards process and product development of Token Ring packets over 100Base-VG, comments Jean-Michel Bielle, the European product marketing manager for Proteon’s LAN Products Division. He continued that while Proteon has no official manadate from other vendors to lead the initiative, both AT&T Co and Hewlett-Packard Co were aware of the company’s intentions. Products are scheduled for delivery in early 1994.
