Although most of Carlton Communications Plc’s acti-vities are outside the scope of Computergram, the acquisition of UEI Plc brings under the banner of the London television, video and film media company two or three strongly computerrelated businesses. Commenting on its figures, Carlton notes that the Quantel Paintbox V series for computer generation of special effects for television so highly regarded that Fujitsu Ltd was proud to highlight in an advertisement the fact that Paintboxes used its OEM disk drives was very well received at its launch in the spring, and that order levels are encouraging. Quantel, in Newbury, Berkshire, has a world lead in the technology that enables TV producers to create spinning and erratically zooming images and a vast array of special effects, and the Paintbox V, smaller, more powerful and faster than the Classic Paintbox, as well as being modular, is intended to maintain and extend that lead. There is no men-tion of the publishing software developer Miles 33 Plc this time around, and no word on whether Carlton really does intend to hang onto the Cosworth business of UEI, which builds motor racing engines.
