In explaining the Open Software Foundation’s new structure and mode of operation to asembled journalists in Tokyo late last month, managing director of the Pacific arm Jim Curtin said that the Foundation’s Japanese office was more likely to increase than to cut staff, since it was very profitable. Last year, he claimed, Japan produced revenues of $2.3m and had costs of only $1.4m, and so was well on its way to being self-funding.
