It seems that Prodigy Services Corp was hamstrung by its previous owners – IBM Corp and Sears Roebuck & Co – from exploring much beyond its consumer foothold and it took the buyout led by Carso Global Telecom SA CV and Prodigy chairman Greg Carr last summer to enable it to explore the kind of areas exemplified by this week’s web hosting announcement. The company’s corporate business announced its ProHost hosting service, which it claims was prompted by customer inquiries and represents and ready-made revenue stream to be tapped. The consumer space remains its main focus apparently. The company also said the $179m private placement money secured in May is all available whenever the company wants it and it is not targeted at any one area of the business.
