Of course, the most unrealistic thing about cartoons is the way lip movements never match up to the words being spoken. You’d think it was all real otherwise, right? Well, Adaptive Optics Associates Inc, Cambridge, Massachusetts has developed a system that enables cameras to capture the movements of an actor’s face and transfer them to an animated character in the computer. The system uses two video cameras and a collection of highly reflective dots attached to the actor’s face. The two cameras triangulate the movement of the dots on the actor’s face and transfer their movement to the computer. It in turn, translates the movement to an animated face – taking only a quarter of a second, declares the company.
