Prime Computer Inc’s Computervision Corp unit has acquired a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based developer of variable geometry design software. DesignView, targetted at personal computers and workstations, is to be incorporated into Computervision’s CADD family. It is the first personal computer-based package that is CADDS-compatible, and Computervision says that the two-dimensional sketching tool is designed for mechanical engineers. DesignView is to be sold directly and through Computervision’s Personal CAD/CAM division, and Electronic News says it is the first CADDS module to be marketed through this channel. The software is available immediately in its present form, but Computervision will not commit to a date for the integrated product. The Premise team of developers have been hired by Computervision, but the company plans to retain its Cambridge headquarters to ensure continued co-operation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. DesignView runs on Sun Microsystems Inc and Digital Equipment Corp workstations, although CADDS runs only on Sun equipment.
