Prime Computer Inc has won two European orders for its System 9 Geographic Information System, which it is now marketing worldwide following a joint agreement with Wild Leitz AG of Switzerland – the company soon to be known as Leica Plc earlier this year. The National Geographic Institute of France has chosen the system for capturing and revising photographic data which will be used to make up a topographic database. In Sweden, the city of Uppsala is spending $2m installing the system to manage its land registration, water, sanitation, electricity and heating requirements. System 9 records, manages, and displays locational data and collates it with environmental, socio-economic and other land based information. It runs under Unix on Sun Microsystems workstations or in a network connected to a file server. The French contract comprises of an initial eight S9-AP workstations, while in Uppsala 13 workstations and three servers will be connected to a local area network.
