Sony claimed that the weekly sales of its PS3 consoles in the US were 75,000 and 100,000 since October 29 2007, compared to the weekly sales of 30,000 to 40,000 earlier. In October, it reduced the price of its PS3 model with 80GB hard disk drive by 17% to $499 from $599. The company also launched a cheaper model in the US with a 40GB hard drive for $400.
The PS3, which was launched last year, has recorded lower sales due to high prices and the lack of compatibility with its predecessor, the PlayStation 2. Its competitors Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii are available at a price range of $278 to $450 and $250, respectively.
