Priam Corp has turned to its start-up San Jose neighbour Comport Inc for a line of 3.5 Winchester disk drives, and has announced the first ones as the Model 3000 Series. The manufacturing is being done for Comport by Samsung Electronics Co of Seoul, South Korea. Priam is supplying Comport with the necessary engineering and quality testing support to ensure that the drives meet Priam product specifications, and has made a small equity investment in Comport with an option to buy the entire company for an undisclosed amount. The three models come in formatted capacities of 85.7Mb and 43.7Mb: the 3708 is the 85.7Mb model, with SCSI interface and 29mS access time; it is $430 in OEM quantities. The two 43.7Mb drives are the 3804 with an IBM AT interface and 29mS access time at $340 in volume, and the 3504, ST412 and 39mS access, at $280 in volume.
