PREPARING A GREEN APPLE

By CBR Staff Writer

Also jumping aboard the bandwaggon is Apple Computer Inc, which said it plans to design and market computers and peripherals that will automatically shut down power or go into a low-power idle state when not actually processing data: the plan is part of Apple’s participation in a new Environmental Protection Agency programme to promote the development of personal computers that use less energy; Compaq Computer Corp, Digital Equipment Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM Corp, NCR Corp, Smith Corona Corp and Zenith Data Systems are also participating in the programme; the overall goal of the effort is to save $1,000m a year in power costs, said to be enough electricity to supply the states of Vermont and New Hampshire.
