Electronic products supplier Premier Farnell has signed an agreement with Sony UK Technology Centre to manufacture Raspberry Pi computers in the Wales.

Developed by Raspberry Pi Foundation, the device was launched in April 2012 and till date the manufacturing has been taking place in China.

Initially, the facility will produce more than 300,000 units for customers across the world.

The Raspberry Pi was built to develop young people’s skills in computer programming and electronic engineering.

Since February this year, Premier Farnell has been selling the device through its brands of Farnell element14 in Europe, Newark element14 in North America and element14 in Asia Pacific, and more recently through subsidiaries CPC in the UK and MCM Electronics in the US.

Premier Farnell global head of EDE Mike Buffham said, "When it came to reviewing our manufacturing strategy we were always keen to bring the production of the Raspberry Pi to the UK."

Sony’s CEM facility in Pencoed, South Wales, has already started making Raspberry Pi boards for Farnell.
