Millicom Inc’s proposal to take Britain’s Personal Communications Network pocket phone idea to the US (CI No 1,303) is playing with the Federal Communications Commission, which is interested enough to invite public comment, but has not had any press or made any impact on the shares of the cellular telephone operators whose prospects could be mightily damaged by a new wave of competition, the Wall Street Journal points out, suggesting that this may be because it is Millicom, a small company whose main businesses are now outside the US, that is putting the proposal – but it is likely that other US phone companies, particularly ones not already heavily involved in cellular service at home, will put their weight behind the initiative.
