The initial concept for Generics Group Plc’s virtual phone is very neat: the idea is that until public Asynchronous Transfer Mode networks become available, it should be sold attached to an ATM PABX which would include an image server, which would mean that anyone that bought the PABX would have access to many new facilities in-house, while not being locked out of any existing external services – and would be ready for the day when Asynchronous Transfer Mode and image transfer become widespread; early applications are seen in police and other command and control systems, and in security and medical applications.
