Portland 1.0 is the result of a joint development of the Open Source Development Labs and reedesktop.org groups and includes a set of command line tools to help ISVs install and integrate their applications with Linux desktop distributions.
The technology is available immediately in community Linux distributions such as Fedora, openSUSE, and Debian, while vendors such as Red Flag Software Co Ltd and Xandros Inc have committed to include it in forthcoming versions.
Trolltech SA is also using Portland 1.0 with its Qt application framework, which is the basis for KDE, to provide interoperability with Gnome. More commercial commitments are likely to follow, especially as Portland 1.0 is expected to be included in the Linux Standards Base.
The project was created following a meeting in December 2005 that included members of the OSDL’s Desktop Linux Working Group, freedesktop.org, members of the Gnome and KDE projects, and the likes of Fedora, openSUSE, Xandros, Linspire, Mandriva, Ubuntu, and Sun Wah.
