Popularity boost for phablets, now second most popular device

The large-screened smartphones have soared in popularity in the last year.

Phablets have soared up the rankings to become the second most popular device category, according to Flurry Analytics.

Phablets now account for more than 20 percent of the device market, a threefold rise from a figure of 6 percent in January 2014.

This share was mainly taken from medium-sized phones, which lost a 9 percent share. Full-size tablets also saw their market share fall from 15 percent to 12 percent.

The research also found that despite the success of the iPhone 6 Plus, more Android users are willing to use phablets. 36 percent of active Android devices in March 2015 were phablets, compared to 4 percent of iOS devices. Also, since the dual launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, there have been approximately 2.75 times the number of iPhone 6s as Pluses.

Additionally, while in 2013 only 10 percent of Android phones were phablets, phablet share has risen to 27 percent, largely at the expense of medium phones.

The largest adoption of phablets was seen in Asian markets, with Taiwan and Hong Kong seeing 50 percent of active device users on phablets.

"The pace of mobile growth and shifting of consumer preferences continues to be the fastest we’ve witnessed in our lifetimes," the report concludes.

"20 percent of all active devices are now phablets, up from only 3 percent two years ago and we see no sign of this trend stopping. If there is one lesson to be learned in the phablet revolution perhaps it is this: Don’t bet against the Asian early adopter markets; they are usually onto something big."
