Those who have lost a few pounds or a perhaps a few hundred on their privatisation issues and Royal Life punts might spare a thought for poor Bill Gates: his spell as a youthful billionaire has proved shortlived, and as of Tuesday night the market mayhem had reduced the value of his holding in Microsoft Corp to just $510m or so – but that, as they say, is when you find out who your true friends are.
