Sunnyvale, California-based i-Planet Inc has announced that Sun Microsystems Inc has licensed its newly unveiled PonyEspresso 2.0 Java-based email client for use by its own staff. The product runs on any Java compatible system and is designed to provide remote email access while maintaining network security. I-Planet is targeting the new applet at roaming corporate users saying it is the first of its kind to use Secure Sockets Layer encryption technology which, it claims, helps provide high level protection without constantly having to reconfigure security features. The company is also pushing its patent-pending Mochila technology which is used to automatically encrypt all communications between the mail client and the mail server. PonyEspresso is designed to allow users to view email message headers before they download their mail, enabling them to optimize download times and battery life and the product also has a dynamic user interface which communicates with the server in real time. i-Planet already sells an earlier version of the PonyEspresso software in its existing Mailsuite offering which includes a collection of email enhancements. Formed in 1996, the company specializes in turnkey connectivity and communications. PonyEspresso is available now with pricing based on the number of users. One to 10 users costs $795, 11 to 50 users is $1,195 and $2,995 buys an unlimited number of users per server.
