The New Scientist reports Polaroid has invented a brighter, whiter liquid crystal screen that is ideal for sun-lovers. Even while bathing in sunshine, they can see the displays on mobile screens, phones and personal organizers. It’s all due to a holographic reflector that consists of holographic film backed by aluminized plastic and it lies behind the liquid crystal display to reflects ambient light. Acting as a lens, the hologram allows light to pass straight through, but it reflects back at a particular angle, like holograms on credit cards, producing a much brighter image. Polaroid claims the reflectors are up to three times brighter than current generation liquid-crystal screens, and the company intends to go into mass-production later this year, targeting the personal display market initially.
