According to the latest report from Strategy Analytics, Sony has shipped 18.5 million units of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) games console, outshining Microsoft’s 12.4 million units of Xbox One.

In its Connected Home Devices, Strategy Analytics said that the gap between the two rival game consoles will grow further by 2019, with PS4 shipments expected to reach 80 million units compared to 57 million units of Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Sony has also outperformed the success of the PS3 as the company shipped 10.5 million units in the first year, while it nearly matched the 20.1 million units of the PS2 that were initially shipped.

Microsoft shipped 12.4 million Xbox One units, outperforming the success of 10.4 million unit shipments of Xbox 360.

According to the analysts, total game console shipments grew 11% in terms of year-on-year comparison to 34 million during 2014.

Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices senior analyst Eric Smith said: "Despite reports to the contrary, the Game Console market is not dead.

"Core gamers have moved faster to this current generation than in any previous generation.

"The main difference in this generation is that casual gamers who bought a Wii are remaining largely on the side lines as free-to-play casual games and mid-core games on Tablets and Smartphones have captured this segment of consumers."
