The company, which sells discounted DVDs, CDs, games and electronics solely via the internet and competes with the likes of Amazon and eBay, has selected Pillar Data Systems’ Axiom storage system to support peaks and troughs in customer activity on its website.

Having been let down by previous storage providers, Play.com is hoping the new system will suit its business requirements and enable the company to continue growing both the business and its revenues.

Pillar claims that Axiom offers a flexible, easy-to-manage platform, which consolidates multiple tiers of storage in one system capable of scaling to hundreds of terabytes of capacity.

Online retailers have the benefit of total, instant control over prices and promotions; however, if database systems running in the background of the transaction mechanisms are not correctly supported by a robust storage system, the entire business could be paralyzed, said Brenda Zawatski, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Pillar.

Any storage system implemented must have the capability to provide quick, no-fuss access to database information, and must also have the flexibility to cope with major demand at peak times, such as Christmas or summer sales. We believe the Pillar Axiom will ensure Play.com retains its strong market position well into the future.
