Plat’Home has launched a new model of its OpenBlockS series, a line of Linux micro servers. The OpenBlockS 600 comes with a fanless and spindle free design and gibabit ethernet in a palm-sized box.
According to Plat’Home, the OpenBlockS 600 includes 600MHz PowerPC CPU, 1GB RAM, internal compact flash type-I card slot, 128MB onboard flash ROM, ethernet 2x 10/100/1000Base-T, and 3x USB2.0 (2 external, 1 internal, 2x RS-232C serial port, RJ-45 connector).
The company said that the new model consumes 8W power consumption and is heat and dust resistant. It comes in 5 x 3 x 1 inches and offers more than twice the CPU speed and eight times the RAM compared to its previous model. Preinstalled in the device is the embedded OS SSD/Linux developed by Plat’Home and all preinstalled software on the new server is open source.
The company claims that the new OpenBlockS offers energy-saving platform for web applications. By replacing servers for network core services like DNS and DHCP with the OpenBlockS, users can reduce energy consumption and thus CO2 emissions by over 90%.

Plat’Home said that the OpenBlockS series already has the lowest possible carbon footprint, and it decided to go one step further by supporting a carbon offset program. This program is planned to set off 1000 metric tons of CO2 in a wind energy project in Tamil Nadu, India.
