PLASMON MOVES INTO TAPE STORAGE WITH IBM DEAL

By CBR Staff Writer

Plasmon Plc the Cambridgeshire, UK-based data storage group has signed a cross-licensing deal with IBM Corp that will enable it to launch a new range of automated tape library products. They will be based on IBM’s MagStar technology, which has advantages over traditional DLT technology in terms of speed of access. Plasmon chief executive Nigel Street said the deal would allow it to leverage its expertise in optical automation into the tape automation marketplace. The markets Plasmon is aiming at are medium-sized multi-user server environments. The company says that research by Dataquest and the Gartner group puts the value of this segment of the market at $1bn a year, with shipments set to double by 2002. News of the deal pushed Plasmon’s shares up 17% to 66.5 pence.
