PixTech Inc, the Rousset, France-based field emission displays (FED) developer, has delivered the first 12.1-inch screen to the US army under a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) contract it inherited from its $11m acquisition of Micron Technology IncÆs Boise, Idaho display division in March (CI No 3,624).

The monochrome FED with 800 x 600 resolution is a step towards delivery of a full-color FED with 1026 x 768 resolution that may be deployed in tanks and other military applications.

PixTech claims to be the first to develop color video FED display but is faced with formidable competitors including Sony, Fujitsu, Samsung, Candescent and FED Corporation.

With its shares languishing at $1.65 on Friday, Pixtech has a poor financial record, and last month recorded a $7.6m loss for the third quarter to September 30, compared to a loss of $3.9m in the same period last year. Revenue was up 58.5% for the period, at $948,000.
