PictureWorks Technology Inc has announced PhotoEnhancer, which uses the firm’s new SmartPix to automatically edit and improve pictures from digital cameras. It includes SmartPix for QuickTake – an optimised filtering technology specifically for photographs taken with the Apple Computer Inc QuickTake 100 digital camera. SmartPix provides custom built-in corrections for problem lighting conditions that can affect picture quality. It uses a set of algorithms to distinguish pictures taken in fluorescent light and ones taken in bright outside daylight, for example. The By Example editing feature offers nine visual choices on screen for improving photographic characteristics such as exposure, focus, colour, brightness and contrast. It is designed as a companion for digital cameras such as Apple QuickTake, but also opens and enhances images from stock photography CDs in TIFF, PICT and EPS formats. It lists for $130.
