The race is on to introduce second generation Personal Handy Phones into a stalling Japanese market for the new service, and three companies have announced new products: Kenwood Corp will introduce a new 3.7 oz model on April 15 which makes no sound but vibrates in the user’s pockets. Kenwood gave no price. Sanyo Electric Co Ltd will introduce its phone on April 21 and claims it is the industry’s smallest and lightest such phone, weighing in at just 3.1 oz. It stores 200 telephone numbers, runs continuously for 4.5 hours and is priced at $445. JVC Ltd’s 4.5oz handset goes on sale on May 7 and will store 300 numbers, has a quick search facility and can run for 6.5 hours continuously, the firm said.
