Phoenix Technologies Ltd, Norwood, Massachusetts has joined forces with Matrox Electronic Systems Ltd to provide a means for Unix users to run VGA-compatible MS-DOS applications under the X Window System on an IBM PS/2 Micro Channel system. The offering couples Phoenix’s VP/ix emulator, which enables users to run MS-DOS applications under Unix as a task, with the Matrox PG2-1281 graphics board to turn VGA-compatible MS-DOS applications into X Window ones. The Matrox PG2-1281 supports a 1,280 by 1,024 non-interlaced display and provides high performance graphics for the PS/2. Based on the Texas Instruments TMS34010 signal processor and several Matrox custom gate arrays, the PG2-1281 incorporates features designed to accelerate graphic operations commonly found in X Window, such as backing stores, saveunders and graphic contexts. The video emulation software in the new release of VP/ix is claimed to provide 100% VGA compatibility within a window on a host’s display, at speeds it says are comparable with native VGA under MS-DOS. Phoenix gave no prices for the products.
