BIOS specialist Phoenix Technologies Ltd, Santa Clara, California has launched a suite of applications to support the implementation of Windows NT 4.0 on laptops. The Phoenix Portable Software Suite for NT 4.0 is intended to provide mobile computers with the same level of performance from NT that desktops can expect. The fact that laptop computers were not considered when Microsoft Corp originally wrote Windows NT leads Phoenix to believe it can carve out a nice little niche in this area. The suite includes NoteBIOS 4.0 for NT system-level software; BatteryScope 2.0, which monitors the battery life, PhoenixCard Executive, which gives PC Card support for up to 200 devices; and PowerPanel 2.0 power management feature, with save-to-disk capability which enables the user to suspend work in power saving mode and resume at the same point without having to exit the application or reboot the machine. Several laptop manufactures including NEC Corp, Fujitsu Ltd and AST Research Inc gave demonstrations at Comdex last month. Shipments from next quarter, no prices.
