The team pushing the concept of Plug & Play to make iAPX-86-based personal computers easier to configure for specific models of peripherals such as printers and networking boards, has now completed the Plug & Play BIOS specification. The work was done by Compaq Computer Corp and BIOS king Phoenix Technologies Ltd. The specification has been released free of charge to the industry; Microsoft Corp and Intel Corp provided interface specifications to make the first implementation of Plug & Play available for Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. The first Plug & Play operating system on the market will be the next generation of Windows, presumably the one now code-named Chicago.
