Philsar Electronics Inc and Omron Corp have teamed up to develop a ‘radio’ chip to add wireless communications capabilities to PDAs and other hand held devices. Philsar, a Canadian semiconductor company, and Omron, which is based in Japan, claim that the Muli-Purpose RF transmitter/receiver (MuRF) chip will be ideal for use in battery-powered handhelds because of its low cost and power requirements.

The MuRF chip is a single chip transceiver that operates in the 220MHz to the 928MHz range. The companies plan to sample the chip in the fourth quarter of this year. Philsar recently teamed up with Mitel Semiconductor Inc to develop Bluetooth wireless LAN chipsets.
