Philips Business Systems is trying again in the personal computer market, this time trying to differentiate its offerings from the mass of MS-DOS – and, soon, PS/2 – clones by stressing the personal computer only as part of a larger system that plays on the firm’s strengths – Laservision video disk players, Compact Disk Read-Only Memories and embedded microcontroller Smart Cards: as part of its Europe-wide PC Plus campaign, Philips wants a UKP6m UK order book for personal computers by year-end, and is off to a good start with a UKP3.4m order from the Halifax Building Society for 1,000 micros coupled to Laservision players for in-branch training.
