Philips Electronics NV emphatically needs to turn its Compact Disk-Interactive system into a major commercial success, but the thing has got off to a slow start and in the US, the Knoxville, Tennessee-based Philips Consumer Electronics Co has cut the price of the thing by $300: it now costs $700 and the move coincides with the start of a mass marketing campaign to reach 2,000 retail outlets by the end of the year; the reduced price includes a promotion, which entitles buyers to $100 worth of disks, including three CD-I titles as well as a Kodalux Photo CD processing mailer.
