Philips Electronics NV has established a new business to provide systems to meet the needs of emerging markets for digital video signal delivery in the US. Philips Digital Videocommunications Systems, based in Knoxville as part of Philips Consumer Electronics Co, will develop and market digital video signal delivery systems for home and professional applications. It will co-ordinate existing and create new dedicated resources to identify and pursue opportunities with cable systems, telecommunications companies and business communications networks. Digital Systems will, in part, market digital systems providing source coding and multiplexing, channel coding and modulation, distribution and switching for signal reception. The new group completes the creation of Philips’ global Digital Systems Business Unit announced last month and will have responsibility for existing signal delivery development groups within Philips Consumer Electronics Co, including the team devoted to compressed digital video systems for Whittle Communications.
