Elonex Plc, a rare example of a European PC maker which still does research and development, has picked up the biggest licensee yet for its 20-odd patents covering peripheral power management technologies. This time Philips Consumer Electronics BV, one of the world’s largest TV makers, has licensed Elonex’s display monitor power management technology, joining Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard and Nokia Display products in endorsing the London company’s efforts.

Last year, Elonex filed lawsuits against Dell Computer Corp, Micron Electronics Inc, Packard Bell NEC Inc and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssystem AG over the patents, which it claims are infringed by virtually all PC makers who use power management software to send computer monitors into deep sleep mode when not in use.
