A digital telephone switch has recently been installed in Kaliningrad as a part of the project being carried out by the Perspective Technologies Agency. The switch was bought from Philips Electronics NV for $1.27m and can support 2,000 telephone lines. It is connected with a fibre optic ring, recently pulled along the Moscow Garden Ring by the agency, via a 16-mile fibre optic cable. The agency says as a first stage, the ring will mainly serve regional police departments, enabling them to communicate with more of their Moscow colleagues. It has been hard to set up data exchange between the police departments which is an obstacle in their work.
