The rumor suggested that Philips’ latest patent would cause DVRs to freeze at commercials, meaning users could not skip past them or even change the channel.

Philips, however, has issued a statement saying it never had the intention to force viewers to watch ads against their will and does not use this technology in any current Philips products, nor do we have any plans to do so.

Instead, Philips said it filed the patent to keep abreast with recent developments within the industry, rather than with the aim of developing any specific product.
