PHILIPS AND TAIWANESE GOVERNMENT FORM JOINT VENTURE COMPANY

By CBR Staff Writer

Philips NV and the Taiwanese government have completed negotiations for a joint venture company to make 6 silicon wafers in Taiwan: the new Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp is capitalised at $145m, with the government putting up 48.3%, Philips 27.5% and local companies the balance; full capacity under the first phase of production is due to be reached at year-end, with the second phase due to reach volume output by 1990; aim of the venture is to give small local companies that do not have the resources to make their own wafers.
