Global phablet shipment is expected to reach more than 120 million units by 2018, according to a report from analysts Juniper Research.

According to the report, about 20 million units of phablets were shipped in 2013.

The increase in shipments is expected to be driven by the high adoption in markets of East Asian territories like South Korea, where gamers have a desire to own devices with larger surface to play on while in China content streamers will want higher quality screen.

The phablet market is expected to become a growth area for established smartphone vendors and also enable them to build flagship phablet models that are aimed to have tech heavy demographics.

New vendors including Nokia, Alcatel and Intex are expected to experience high growths in the phablet market due to the price difference compared to the global brands predicated.

Android and Windows will dominate the phablet market and Windows OS will be driven by Nokia’s Lumia range, which is expected to be sold in affluent demographics of developing nations.
