Personal and financial indulgence top 2003 spam list

Viagra, lowest mortgage rates, hot XXX action and "as seen on Oprah" topped the list of last year's most commonly used subject lines in e-mail sent by spammers.

Other leading inducements included online pharmacy, get bigger, online degree, lowest insurance rates, work from home and get out of debt, according to America Online Inc.

The Internet service providers’ poll came as the US government’s Can-Spam act officially came into action, on January 1.

Lawmakers promised that law would combat the amount of spam, although critics argue the legislation actually legalizes spam.

Commenting on its poll, AOL noted the biggest challenge will be to stop die-hard spammers. Professional spammers work the Internet, using tricks like misspelling words and replacing letters with numbers and spaces to fool spam filters.
