The US Department of Defense has put out a request for proposals for technology applicable to high definition television receivers. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is talking of putting up $15m for the development of display technology, and the request covers cathode ray tubes, projection displays, back projection systems and solid state flat panel displays. Another $15m is likely to be offered for development of display processor technology, anything from a modified display processor, personal computer or workstation already in use, to a completely new product of special or general purpose nature. Proposers are also asked to weigh the merits of analogue and digital technology, although it seems certain that the latter will win out in the end. Proposals have to reach the Agency by February 13.
