Japanese domestic shipments of personal computers jumped 31% year-on-year in the second quarter of the 1999/2000 financial year to 2.35 million units, marking a gain for the fifth consecutive quarter, the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association said. The six-month April-September figure hit an all-time high of 4.39 million, up 34% year-on-year. Strong consumer demand lifted overall shipments thanks to the spread of the internet and falling PC prices, the association noted, saying a recovery in corporate demand also contributed. The association raised its estimate for fiscal 1999 shipments to 9 million from an earlier forecast of 8 million, a 19% increase from fiscal 1998. The value of shipments in July-September rose 22% year on year to 478.5bn yen ($4.5bn). The figure for April-September was up 25% to 907.3bn yen ($8.6bn).
