PC MAKERS MUST NOW LICENSE SIEMENS’ MONITOR POWERSAVE

By CBR Staff Writer

Siemens Nixdorf Informationssystem AG has now been awarded a patent for its widely used PowerSave technology from the US Patent Office. PowerSave, used internally at Siemens since November 1995, reduces the power consumed by computer monitors when not in use, by putting them into deep sleep mode. It’s used in almost all PCs and monitors now on the market. Estimates place potential savings at $100 per machine, per year. Siemens, which already licenses the technology in the European marketplace, says that US manufacturers and providers now require a license to use it, and it intends to issue license agreements in the US to cover the rights.
