nuMedica’s bedside physician documentation system, FormED, consists of complaint or procedure-specific physician chart templates, which use a consistent layout and are customizable to individual emergency department (ED) requirements. The product also features pre-written discharge instructions and a prescription writer.

These templates are designed to ease ED pressures by saving time, lowering documentation costs, generating more robust and compliant documentation of the patient visit and increasing billing revenue and reimbursement.

The deal marks the second acquisition by Patient Care Technology Systems (PCTS) in the past 8 months, after it bought Healthcare IT, a provider of passive tracking software in US EDs, in December 2004.

Paper charting based on chief complaint templates represents the charting method of approximately a third of all emergency departments in the US, said Tony Marsico, CEO of PCTS. As hospitals evaluate their migration to electronic medical records, we see a strong opportunity to serve the ED segment who chart with paper templates with a more user-configurable and affordable option.
