PATENT LITIGATION SET TO BECOME A GROWTH INDUSTRY AT IBM

Who says IBM isn’t gonna try making intellectual property its next growth market? The company has been running recruitment advertisements in US editions of the Wall Street Journal that read: Intellectual Property Attorneys. IBM is seeking a number of experienced attorneys to assume direct responsibility for patents and other intellectual property matters in specific technical product areas. Assignments are available in the Burlington, Vermont; Raleigh, North Carolina; Tucson, Arizona; Boca Raton, Florida; and Yorktown, Endicott, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie, New York areas. Positions require technical undergraduate degrees, a JD or LLB, admission to the Bar and experience before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Qualifications should include a minimum of three years patent and other intellectual property law experience in any of the following fields: signal processing, computer systems, computer programming, digital electronic circuits, semiconductor devices and processes, and communications. AST Research Inc, Irvine, California, is offering $50m of 8.5% convertible subordinated debentures due 2013 at par through First Boston Corp. The debentures will be convertible into AST common shares at a rate of $15.50 per share, which compares with a current price in the market of $12.25.
