The alliance will combine Parthus’ 2G/2.5G technology with the 3G technology of UbiNetics. As part of the alliance, the companies will develop a ‘multi-mode’ wireless roaming platform, which enables 3G phones to use existing 2G/2.5G networks. This will allow 3G users to make calls outside urban areas that are not covered by the high-speed networks.

The core intellectual property rights for the platform will be licensed to semiconductor and handset makers – primarily through Parthus’s own sales channels.

Parthus will also take a minority stake in the UK company, which is owned by PA Consulting. The price is thought to be around $2 million, which will give Parthus a 5% holding.
