Mountain View, California-based ParcPlace Systems Inc moved its object-oriented application development environment on with the introduction of Objectworks1/4Smalltalk Release 4.1 and Objectkit1/4Smalltalk C Programming, an extension to the Smalltalk environment that simplifies access to C libraries and applications. Objectworks1/4Smalltalk will now support the Microsoft Corp Windows 3.1 and Macintosh System 7 operating systems. The company says that Objectworks1/4Smalltalk adds an object-oriented memory manager, enabling developers to indicate objects within an application that will not change over time, so that the manager needs to focus only on objects that will be changed, improving its efficiency for deployed applications. Release 4.1 also features improved graphics and enhanced support for colour. Applications developed with Objectworks1/ 4Smalltalk will be instantly portable across all major client-server environments including Windows, Macintosh, and Unix, the company claims.
