PANIC AFTER MISINTERPRETATION OF AT&T STATEMENT

By CBR Staff Writer

Intercontinental panic reigned yesterday afternoon after the French news agency Agence France Presse misinterpreted a statement by AT&T Data Systems chief Robert Kavner and put out an item headlined Unix: AT&T announces its intention to join the Open Software Foundation, and in the text attributing to Kavner the statement We are going to join this group, with AT&T flacks desperately trying to get a correction put out on the wire before too much damage was done: what Kavner actually said was we will continue to work with the industry, including members of this group, to maintain a single Unix system standard, and if this group comes up with something that the industry considers valuable we will applaud their efforts and incorporate it into the Unix System V standard – but above that, Kavner had said this new group has no track record… we are not joining this group because we have these concerns and because we believe the industry needs us to continue the momentum and development of the Unix System V platform.
