Paging Network Inc, Dallas, the largest paging company in the US, will team with Motorola Inc to introduce a new personal communications service featuring a portable wireless answering machine, small enough to fit into the palm of the hand: Motorola will be contracted to supply the subscriber equipment, infrastructure and system engineering expertise; the pager-like Keynote device captures, stores and replays the human voice; PageNet expects to market the product and service for $20 a month; the caller dials a telephone number assigned to the device and leaves a spoken message; PageNet’s computer then sends a short signal through the transmission network to locate the user’s device, and when it receives acknowledgement, pinpoints the device’s location and transmits the complete digitised spoken message from the closest transmitter.
